Some lives arrive not to follow the path—but to carve a new one.
To ask: What if we refused to give up? What if one child could change everything?
My son was one of those lives.
Diagnosed in utero with a severe congenital defect—one considered incompatible with life—At just 20 weeks of my twin pregnancy, my gynecologist advised me to terminate the entire pregnancy. “It will be easier,” she said, as if I should erase them both.
Terminate. Move on. Forget.
But something deeper than science stirred inside me—a force stronger than fear.
It was the instinct of a mother. The sacred shield that forms the moment you know life is growing inside you.
I refused.
And so he was.
But when he entered the world, he could not wait—not a day, not an hour.
He needed surgery immediately.
Yet no hospital in Russia had ever performed such an operation within the first hour of life. There were no protocols. No plans. No precedent.
But there was will.
There was faith.
There was a child who simply refused to die.
Thanks to the extraordinary commitment of the medical team—and the determination of our family—he underwent life-saving surgery within 30 minutes of birth—and he survived.
That single act shattered the old limits of possibility.
It sparked the creation of a new department. A new standard. A new future.
Today, countless newborn babies with life-threatening conditions receive life-saving care in those first critical minutes, because of what was once done for him.
Looking back now, it strikes me that his suffering carried meaning beyond my fear.
This was not a biological error, but a line written long before his first breath.
Perhaps it was God’s will. Perhaps it was destiny itself.
One fragile life, born in pain, was meant to change what medicine believed was possible—and to open the way for many others to survive.
This is why we founded the Hope & Heart Bockeria Foundation.
Because sometimes, one child… one choice… one unshakable belief… echoes into eternity
